The Future

By Tervonne

In five years i see myself with at least one degree an a couple certificates. Then I see myself going to law school, before that I will be hopefully be working in the hospital making that bread. I have a long term boyfriend (Aaron) who is working a good job and will take care of me. Also in five years I will not be living in Michigan and hopefully no kids, if so I would just be beginning to think about having kids.

I'm going to get there by first having money then going to school and graduate, trying to find people who know people to get that job in he hospital, my own apartment, cars, or home, and making my life stable enough to bring my kids up in this place called hell.

What I have learned from this internship is that if you let someone bring you down with them it could be bad for your heart...I learned to help my anger and bite my tongue about a lot of stuff.

Five Years Into the Future

In five years I want to be in college, studying to be a vetrinarian. I want to go to MSU, (Michigan State University) because they have one of the best vetrinarian programs in the country. To reach my goal I need to be successful in high school, by gettin good grades. I have a 3.2 GPA so I'm doing, good with high school I'm going to graduate next year. And a couple of months after that I want to be enrolled at MSU.

During my summer intership, I learned several things, some skills that I learned in soft skills were how to make a resume, and a cover letter. These will help me in the future when I am looking for a job. I also learned how to create and manage a checking account. I learned how to create a successful business plan. So overall I've had a great summer, I made alot of money, learned a lot of things, and made a bunch of new friends.

The Future...(Am I Ready?)

In 5 yrs. I can see myself starting to be financially stable while hopefully going to grad school, somewhere down in the south or... the west coast (no where specific yet!). Depending on my financially stability, and location stability I could maybe have a family (kids/ If things go right relationship wise, I could see myself married).

Even though I don't have a concrete answer on my career path at the moment, I have narrowed it down to first; computer science, and secondly; some where in the business management area. I believe my best way of reaching my long term goals is to start working hard now.
Staying strong in school (focus) finding a internship which can help open a wide variety of opportunities.

Some ways in which I've started is here at youth works. learning soft skills and business management info (insight through the b. side of youth). And also becoming more aware of my important financial decisions.

The Health Care Journey

Finishing from where I left off a lot of new things are happening. For example, you may or may not have heard about medical scrubs that most health care workers wear. Well now me and the rest of my co-workers have received MEDICAL SCRUBS like the doctors, and I always thought they would be extremely tight. It turns out there actually pretty comfortable if you choose the right size, and our particular scrubs say PACKARD HEALTH and are a real light blue kind of color. Well besides all of that, everyone in my internship was blessed with the opportunity to go to the University of Michigan Critical Research Unit. There we learned about Wilson's disease, which is when someone has too much copper in their body. This leads to a small brownish color around your eye, also we happened to take a tour of the facility. The facility looks enormous when you are walking in it, but once you walk outside the door you notice that it is not as big as you thought. There are many other trips we have in store, so as soon as those are conducted. I will keep you posted!!!

Healthcare Work

By Kurt

In my internship there is one person that I like who gave me more confidence in my going into the medical field. He was a doctor named Sean. He graduated from U of M in 2007. I admired him the most because of the simple fact that he kept everything realistic about life and going to school. He was a really down to earth, easy to talk to, and very relaxed but confident at the same time. The way he made me feel when he talked was that I can see myself in his position in a couple of years.

"You have to be positive..."

By LaTasha
One person I would like to get to know more better is Mildred. She is from New York and came over to Michigan in about 2000 or 2002. One thing that makes her really mad is when people talk while she is talking or people are talking and she cannot hear who is talking. She hasn't been back since she moved here because her son lives here. In our talks everyone ask questions about us to get what had a positive or negative effect in our life time. Mildred also reminds me of my mother because she never wants to be bothered or do activities that have no meaning to them. I would like to have a one-on-one with her because she has a lot of history and a lot to say.

A few things that make me great at my gob are having history with working with older people and at a nursing home. You have to be positive and not take in what the people say. I have to be strong, be able to talk loud and not scared to be hands on with the people.

Communities: Giving Back

By Lauren
So far, in my internship as a camp counselor at Bryant Community Center everything has been going absolutely amazing, the kids are great and I hope they are enjoying themselves throughout the day because I know we are :). Recently Atiya and I are putting together a field trip for the kids to go to the Hands On Museum. I hope this trip will be highly educational for them as well as ensuring them a good time. I used to go to that Museum a ton when I was their age, it was my absolute favorite trip we would take in summer camp.

A couple days ago 826 came and had a routine session with us. One of our tasks was to come up with a short but informative paragraph on what we do during the days we're at our home base (Stone) as well as what we do at our sites (community center work). While we were writing, a lot of questions arose, such as "do you think what we do is important/why do you think our volunteering is important?" I most definitely believe that being a volunteer camp counselor at any community center is important because it gives us an inside look at our community as well as other communities we don't see often. In my community (Bryant) there are tons and tons of kids with less advantages than I. It saddens me to see them struggle but when they enter the center its as if none of that matters anymore, whether its from creating a mask or playing capture the flag they always have a smile on their face and for me its an honor and a privilege to have something to do with that. Not only are we helping the kids in the community, we are setting good examples for the future generations. I know for me volunteering always seemed like a chore, something that could never be interesting or to become a benefit to me; this experience has completely changed my perspective on volunteering. Hopefully this chance to be a part of communities will be around for a long while because I believe everyone should have this opportunity to give back and in a nutshell see what the other half lives like.
